This workshop is hosted by the AYCC POC Climate Network, but is open to any young people under 30. We're gathering virtually from all across this vast continent to explore our community, and what it means to be apart of it.
What does First Nations justice and leadership actually look like for climate justice?
Workshop: Deconstructing settler-colonial discourses of environmentalism and representations of Indigeneity in the Australia climate movement
This workshop will deconstruct the entanglement of modern environmentalism with colonial Australian histories. We will explore how settler-colonial narratives shape the climate movement's representation of Indigeneity and discuss how to decolonise our own understanding of what real climate action means. This will be explored through First Nations knowledges, and a study of historical Blak campaigns that show how anti-colonial struggle is integral to climate justice. Attendees will leave with practical insights into decolonising their own climate action with a better understanding of settler positionality in the climate space.
This workshop is being run by Eden, a young Wiradjuri creative and community organiser who aims to embed anti-colonial politics and action across every movement. With their roots as a School Striker, now a Blak Caucus organiser, Eden finds the intersection of youth movements and Indigenous liberation to build peoples capacity of decolonial understanding and organising skills.
Looking forward to seeing you there <3
