This year at COP30, Australian negotiators signed onto the Belém Declaration on the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, a huge step towards a fossil fuel phase out.
This was immediately undermined by PM Anthony Albanese who insisted signing onto the declaration would not change his government's policy, and coal and gas approvals would continue.
Australia is the second biggest polluter in the world, just behind Putin’s Russia, when you take into account the emissions caused by our exports. But with huge potential from wind and solar we could also be powered by 100% renewables.
Standing in the way of this clean future is the influence of fossil fuel companies over our politics. We can challenge that influence through people power and make sure our government answers to us – not polluters.
The next year is crucial in our fight for justice. It’s up to us to hold our Government accountable for their track record on fossil fuels and for a safe climate future.
I pledge to hold the Albanese Government accountable to their commitment to transition away from fossil fuels.
Frackers in the NT are getting ready to scale up work for gas production to a level we’ve never seen - unleashing a devastating carbon bomb equal to that of 50 new coal fired power stations. If we want a chance at a safe future, we must hold off this project.
If our Government is serious about their commitment to phasing out fossil fuels, Labor must act to stop fracking in the NT, redirect the Middle Arm subsidy back to the NT community, and stop funding gas.
