Young people know that the fossil fuel industry is actively harming our lives today, and further threatening our futures. Despite this, the fossil fuel industry has been making its way into education institutions through sponsorships, programs, 'educational' resources + more for several years now - as an attempt to conceal their role in driving climate change + limit our understanding of the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels.
Fossil fuel propaganda in our education doesn't serve young people - it only serves big industries getting away with continuing to pollute our lives. Fossil fuels are opposite to the safe future needed. And for the fossil fuel industry to maintain its polluting agenda, it thinks it can feed lies to young people.
❌ Australia’s fossil fuel industry has invested heavily in building their social license through schools, universities and community education, using corporate sponsorships, classroom resources, and partnerships to present themselves as part of the climate solution while continuing to expand fossil fuel production.
Allowing the fossil fuel industry in our education, young people and future change-makers can't dream of the big solutions (that already exist!) we need and without good climate education, young people are forced to believe climate change is an individual problem, or even worse, making us believe that we don't already have the solutions to safeguard our futures.
But this stops now.
Young people have a right to a fossil-free climate education and a just transition away from fossil fuels. Instead, the industry has heavily invested in greenwashing our education system. That influence currently looks like:
Woodside, Shell, Chevron, Santos, BHP and Glencore are funding more than 260+ publicly documented programs, partnerships and sponsorships across Australian schools and universities reaching kids from as young as 6 months old.
A minimum estimate of $54.53 million has been spent across these programs from the fossil fuel industry.
Kids as young as eight are being taught to model offshore oil drilling with bread, Vegemite and sprinkles as part of Woodside's STEM in Schools program.
And while fossil fuel companies rake in record profits and buy their way into our classrooms, the Labor government is once again captured by the fossil fuel lobby and letting an entire generation become greenwashed by the fossil fuels industry's vested interests.
We urgently need to end this 🚨
What we’re demanding:
It is simple - we’re calling on the Labor government for:
We cannot allow the fossil fuel industry to influence our education system while destroying our chance of a future free from a fossil-fueled climate crisis.
