Letters for Lambie
Come along to our letter writing party to tell crossbencher Jacqui Lambie we want a safe climate future, NOT fossil fuels!
What are we writing about?
Scomo and Angus Taylor want to spend billions propping up the fossil fuel industry with subsidies in the wake of covid-19.
It's called the gas-fired recovery, and it's dodgy af—especially for the climate. We know if we let the government develop full-scale gas fracking in the Beetaloo Basin alone, it could add up to 117 million tonnes of CO2. That's like adding another quarter of Australia's current annual emissions to the atmosphere.
(Btw, the govt's just given $200 million to gas fracking in the NT.)
In short, it's cooked. So, help us tell the government: No Public Money for Gas!
Why are we writing to Lambie?
Jacqui Lambie is one of the key crossbenchers (alongside South Australian senators Stirling Griff and Rex Patrick) who is able to help us stop the coalition's dangerous gas plan by voting against funding legislation that will probably come out in May 2021.
We reckon there's a strong chance that she will be receptive to us, as she said in 2020 that climate change is 'the most important thing on the agenda.'
Basically, we need her onside in our fight for a safe climate future—to stop fossil fuels like fracked gas from being locked into our energy systems for the coming decades.
I've never written a letter to a politician before, is there anything I need to know?
Writing a letter to your MP is a powerful way of showing community support, and MPs are legally required to answer correspondence from their constituents.
Your letter should tell Jacqui a bit about who you are, why you're concerned about the government's gas-fired recovery, and why she should back us in Parliament.
Is there a template?
