AYCC MQU: Macquarie Centre Westpac branch visit
AYCC MACQUARIE GROUP ACTION: Adopt A Westpac branch to #StopAdani!
You may have heard us talk about the environmental disaster that may occur in QLD in the form of a giant new coal mine proposed by an Indian company called Adani?
The planned mega coal mine would be the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, polluting 4 times more carbon than Australia currently pollutes each year. It's a climate disaster.
Unfortunately, both the Queensland Government and the Federal Government have thrown their support behind an Indian coal mining magnate over our Reef and our future.
Good News is that right now, Adani is short on cash. That's where Westpac comes in.
To start digging their dangerous coal mine, Adani needs money from Australian banks. NAB, CommBank and ANZ have all distanced themselves from the project, but Westpac has refused. We need to show Westpac that Australians don't want their money used to prop up this dirty and dead end project.
That's why groups across the country are 'Adopting a Westpac branch'. The aim is to build relationships with the staff and talk to customers, to put pressure on the Westpac board to stop investing in new coal projects and invest in renewables.
Our Macquarie Uni AYCC group have adopted the Westpac branch at Macquarie Centre together as a group. We'll be visiting the Westpac Branch at the Macquarie Centre TUESDAY 21St MARCH at 9:30AM (meet at the Herring Road entrance to Macquarie Shopping Centre, near buses). Can you make it?!
We're also supporting our student group members who want to 'adopt' their own Westpac branch close to their home or place of work. If you're interested in adopting a branch yourself and would like some support from our group, we have a form in our student portal, MacSync (accessible to Macquarie University students), you can fill out and we'll be in touch.
Also, if there is another volunteer who also wants to target a branch in the same area we can pair you up - because everything is better in numbers!
If you can make the branch action TUESDAY 21st MARCH at 9:30AM, please RSVP so we know to wait for you at the meeting point (main entrance on Herring Road, near buses).
