Wallace Wight commented on Fax Bill Shorten to Stop Adani! 2018-10-24 13:20:56 +1100The exit polls from the Wentworth Byelection indicated that over 3/4 of voters were influenced by the lack of climate action by the COALition. Josh Frydenberg and others have since said that they would not introduce a meaningful climate policy.
This provides a golden opportunity for the ALP to differentiate itself from the dinosaurs by strengthening your climate policy. Now is the time to draw a line under the expansion of thermal coal. No more thermal coal mines; no more new basins such as the Galilee opened up to thermal coal extraction; rescinding approvals for the Adani mine on the grounds of non-compliance with conditions and a review of EPBC Act assessments taking into account additional information since the earlier assessment was done; and winding back reliance on export of fossil fuels (especially of thermal coal) as a mainstay of the economy.
Such a climate policy would raise your status among the 78% of Australians seeking stronger action on climate change to ensure a survivable future.
Please commit to “No new coal!”Fax Bill Shorten to Stop Adani!
In the lead-up to a Federal election, we're annoying the heck out of our politicians until they commit to stopping Adani and new coal mines.
You know what's as outdated as coal? Fax machines!
Add your message and we'll fax it - with hundreds of others - to Bill Shorten's office. Heaps annoying, and a surefire way to get our point across!
Your message can be as short or long as you like. Here are a couple of examples:
"Dear Mr Shorten, I wanted to express my concern over the Adani Carmichael mine project. In 2018, we cannot afford to open any new coal mines if we want to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Coal power is even more outdated than using a fax machine - and it's time to supercharge renewable energy. Will your party commit to a position against new coal mines?"
"Dear Mr Shorten, as a young person thinking about my future, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Adani coal mine - and any new coal mines in the Galilee Basin, which would wreck our chances of keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees for a safe climate future. Like fax machines, coal is outdated technology and we don't need it when people right across the world are switching to renewables. I hope your party will commit to a position of no new coal."

Wallace Wight commented on Send A message Email Test 2017-04-13 17:35:47 +1000Australia is the driest habitable continent. Most of Queensland was drought declared only weeks ago. The Great Artesian Basin is the oldest and perhaps the largest aquifer in the world. It is a priceless asset!
To allow 60 years of unlimited extraction of that water to facilitate the largest coal mine in Australia and one of the largest in the world is extremely and unacceptably risky. What if that water is needed to feed ourselves by supporting agriculture and grazing? What if the aquifer is contaminated by the mining operations? What if the uncontrolled draw-down lowers the water table to the point where other users are severely disadvantaged? What have we to show for it?
The Adani mine is a threat to life on the planet. Our reliance on export of coal (no matter where it is burned) will exacerbate the climate change catastrophe already unfolding with high sea temperatures killing the reef, and the prospect of more severe droughts, floods, storms and cyclones.
Please reverse that decision and allow a viable future for our future generations.Send a message to the QLD Government
Thank you for signing the petition! Next step, tell the QLD Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk why you joined the campaign.
Together, let’s send a clear message to our coal-obsessed Government: when they give unlimited water to a billionaire coal miner, people across the country will fight back.
Write your message to the QLD Government now. Just a few sentences is perfect, and here are couple points to help you get started:
-
While 85% of Queensland suffers through crippling drought, the Queensland government is handing a billionaire coal miner unlimited water
-
This water license would drain unlimited amounts of precious QLD water from the Great Artesian Basin
-
The Adani coal mine will wreck our Reef and our climate, something that Australians will not accept
