Seed Update: NT Election and Shale Gas Fracking

Seed mob have been super busy over the last few months; especially in the Northern Territory. Our NT coordinator Scottie - along with some deadly volunteers from Gulf country - put in an incredible amount of work to make sure young mob had their say on fracking in the NT. They enrolled over 100 people to vote in their remote community of Borroloola and also starred in an election video that reached thousands of young mob. Our cheeky gas fracking fact check video was viewed over 40,000 times, and got thousands of shares right before the 2016 Northern Territory election, helping get the most new enrolments and the highest voter turnout ever!

At the beginning of the campaign, 95% of the NT was covered in oil and gas exploration licences. With the hard work of communities across the state that number has dropped to 80%, but we need to keep the pressure up. And there are two really important things you can do:

Support Traditional Owners
Traditional Owners only have the right to say ‘no’ before the exploration stage, which means they have one chance to make an informed decision. Too often they aren’t being given all the information and we need to make sure the Government knows it has to respect their Land Rights. Call for a stronger Moratorium
In the first month of Government, Labor broke their election promise to halt the Shale Gas Industry. They also promised their moratorium would look at the full impacts of fracking but unfortunately they have caved to the pressure of the gas companies and watered it down to only include Hydraulic fracturing. We need you to make a submission to expand the terms of reference so all aspects of this dangerous industry are put under the microscope. You can make a submission here - it’s quick, easy and really important
