PM Abbott’s short-sightedness on climate threatens young people’s future

The Australian Youth Climate Coalition has slammed Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s statement today that he’s not focusing “on what might happen in 16 years' time” in response to the historic China/US climate deal.

Kirsty Albion, National Co-Director of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, described it “as an insult to young people and future generations across the world who will be around to feel the impacts of his short-sightedness.”

“It’s blatantly obvious that Prime Minister Abbott doesn’t care about what happens in the future. He’s just spent the last year attempting to dismantle every piece of our climate and renewable energy legislation, and condemning young people to a lifetime of more extreme bushfires, floods, heatwaves and droughts.”

“Yesterday’s historic announcement from China and the US demonstrates just how much Abbott is living in the past. Australia is getting left behind in the transition to renewable energy.”

“World leaders are sending a clear signal that Australia needs to put climate change on the G20 agenda and treat this issue like the economic, social and environmental emergency that it is.”
