My name is Billy and I am a volunteer with the AYCC in Victoria. I first heard about the AYCC through a friend during a discussion we were having about potential volunteer opportunities. She recommended them highly, and with climate change being something I already had an interest in, I was soon signing my first petitions and then expressed an interest to volunteer.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition has called on the Prime Minister to do all that he can to ensure a safe climate for future generations following reports in the Sydney Morning Herald that he is considering setting higher pollution reduction targets in the lead up to the Paris climate talks.
“Tony Abbott needs to set pollution reduction targets that will protect young people’s future from dangerous global warming” Kirsty Albion, National Director of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition said. “What’s being reported in the media today would be nothing more than the bare minimum and young Australians deserve much more from our Prime Minister when our right to a safe climate is being debated”.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition is calling for Tony Abbott to commit to reducing Australia’s pollution in line with keeping dangerous global warming to 1.5 degrees by the end of the century. According to the AYCC the Government should be setting a pollution reduction target of 80% by 2030 based on 2000 levels.
“Tony Abbott is clearly feeling the pressure to do more as the world threatens to leave Australia behind in the shift to a clean economy. What Tony Abbott does next must be more than just a political fix, he must act in the best interests of young Australians who will bare the brunt of the costs of doing nothing to prevent dangerous global warming”.
“Acting strongly on climate change will protect Australians from increasing drought, bushfires and floods. The Government must do more” Ms Albion said.
