My name is Billy and I am a volunteer with the AYCC in Victoria. I first heard about the AYCC through a friend during a discussion we were having about potential volunteer opportunities. She recommended them highly, and with climate change being something I already had an interest in, I was soon signing my first petitions and then expressed an interest to volunteer.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition has slammed the senate passing Tony Abbott’s cuts to the Renewable Energy Target late on Tuesday night.
“After slamming the brakes on Australia’s clean energy industry 18 months ago, Tony Abbott has pushed through the Senate clean energy cuts that will cost Australia clean jobs and increase pollution” Dan Spencer, media spokesperson for the AYCC said. “It’s an absolute disgrace, that in 2015 when Australia is being called out internationally for failing to act on climate change that politicians would vote to cut our job creating clean energy target”.
“Since coming into power Tony Abbott has done nothing but make our power sector more polluting and attack Australia’s hard working clean energy workers. In 2013 clean energy jobs in Australia fell by 13%, while globally clean energy jobs grew by the same amount” Mr Spencer said. “Australia falling behind the rest of the world on clean energy is because of the uncertainty created by our Prime Minister. Tony Abbott gets no brownie points for passing his clean energy cuts and his view that burning native forest waste counts as clean energy is way out of step with the Australian public”.
“Tony Abbott has let everyone in Australia who wants to see less pollution, more clean energy jobs and lower power prices down by cutting clean energy” Mr Spencer said. “Young Australians expect much more from both the Liberal and Labor parties to support clean energy and we will be making this known all the way up to the next election and beyond”.
