AYCC: Garnaut Not Enough to Renew Our Future

Submitted by AnnaR on September 5, 2008 – 1:23 pmNo Comment

Professor Ross Garnaut has just given his speech to the National Press Club and AYCC just released our media release in response here.

Garnaut was given a mandate to recommend action on climate change – but the targets he recommended today are very, very low: his two scenarios are 10% or 25%  by 2020 from 2000 levels. Even he admits that these targets are extremely risky, as they are based on a global average temperature rise of 2 degrees Celcius. Garnaut’s targets are based on a goal of a world past the “tipping point” into dangerous climate change. They are vastly inadequate to achieve a safe climate.

We are going to need much stronger leadership than this to acheive a safe climate future for our generation.
